For much of 2020, Balai Seni Maybank had to close its doors to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, we have been working on ways to stay in touch with the communities that we serve while still upholding our mission, which is to provide a platform for local artists and support the arts as an avenue of growth.

Watercolours is a popular and affordable medium of art available to people of all ages. However, it is also one of the most difficult media to master. Besides it’s affordability (oil paints were beyond the means of many ordinary people even today) watercolour paints could easily be found in stationary shops and familyrun convenience stores.

Welcome to Pure Painting 2! It’s been a pure pleasure to be able to present this follow-up to the first exhibition we had back in November 2018. The curatorial intention remains unchanged; to showcase non-figurative art by upcoming Malaysian artists.

The government recently approved to lower the voting age of Malaysians from 21 to 18 years of age. With Generation Y or millennials (those born between the 1980s and 1990s) already forming a sizable part of the electorate, politicians from both sides of the divide must now also take into serious consideration the aspirations and the needs of those born between the mid 1990s and early 2000s, (collectively known as Gen Z) into their coming political ‘struggles’.

As we move into the third quarter of 2020, the annual Merdeka celebration is soon upon us. Great though the impact of the global phenomenon of COVID-19 that took our country by storm early in the year has been, we are proud to able to continue to positively impact our communities as we continue to be vigilant and innovative in implementing our mandate.

Batik is an age old craft of wax resist dye technique on textile that was practiced by various cultures around the world though it is today most associated with this side of the region especially Indonesia, which had its batik designated by UNESCO as a masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
