Maybank Garners Illustrious Accolades at 10th Global CSR Summit & Awards

Maybank Group, through its corporate responsibility arm, Maybank Foundation brought home 2 awards, as a testament to Maybank’s initiative and drive to humanise financial services for all ages in the highly contested 10th Global CSR Summit & Awards in Lombok on 19-20th April 2018. Maybank Foundation’s critically acclaimed tiger conservation programme had secured a Silver award in Best Environmental Excellence Award for companies with market capitalisation more than USD1 billion category. Maybank Indonesia also was a part of the honourees in Excellence in Provision of Literacy & Education Award for companies with market capitalisation more than USD1 billion as they had accrued a Gold award in its category.

The Best Environmental Excellence Award was received by Mr. Ahmad Faezal Mohamed, Head of CR and Maybank Foundation Secretariat and the Excellence in Provision of Literacy & Education Award was received by Ibu Esti Nugraheni, Head of Corporate Communication and Branding of Maybank Indonesia.

The Strengthening Tiger Conservation in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Complex

Maybank Foundation and WWF-Malaysia have been partners in the tiger conservation efforts in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve, a priority site for Malayan tigers as outlined in the National Tiger Conservation Action Plan. Maybank Foundation has allocated approximately RM5 million for this partnership over five years.

The 3 core strategies in the Strengthening Tiger Conservation in the Belum-Temenggor Forest Complex programme have been defined as follows:

Protection

• Introduce SMART patrolling in Royal Belum State Park and Temenggor Forest Reserve to ensure comprehensive protection of the Belum-Temenggor Forest Complex.
• Advocate for greater effectiveness in protecting Belum-Temenggor Forest Complex by introducing the minimum protected area standards for tigers.

Monitoring

• Monitor the population of Malayan tigers and its preys to evaluate if the number of individuals change.
• Improve knowledge on the tigers and their preys to better understand the best possible course of action.

Community Engagement

• Increase communities’ awareness and participation in anti-poaching initiatives.
• Develop potential sustainable livelihood revenue generation model to reducing the community dependencies on natural resources from tiger habitat.

As of 2018, 5,347 km of dense forest has been covered by foot patrol, 177 wire snares have been successfully deactivated, thereby potentially saving 177 large animals scouring the forest complex including Malayan tigers and its preys. Old snares, mist nets, hunting hides and bullet shells are all among the items recovered on-site.

Through this programme, we aim to help conserve the declining number of Malayan tigers in Belum-Temenggor Forest Reserve as part of our efforts in preserving a living heritage. This programme is also in accordance with Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Meanwhile, Maybank Indonesia, received the Gold award for its focus in enriching education by providing scholarships for underprivileged family, school adoption and banking education. Scholarships provided cover the cost of education for every semester, living expenses and other expenditures. The School Adoption programme provides various forms of assistance, from donating learning equipment, renovating damaged schools and employee volunteerism activities. The banking education programme targets all levels of society especially those who have limited banking access.
